I wear them with merino wool socks, even in the 87 degree weather, which keeps my feet cooler than the cotton socks. I walk approximately 3 miles each morning out doors, up and down hills, off and on pavement. My feet stay dry in the damp grass, and the broad shoe base gives good stability in the mud.
I'll admit, I struggled with the "quick lace" system the first time, only because I've never seen anything like it. After my husband showed me how it works, I'm a convert. I love how easy it is to get the laces as tight as I like them, and how they don't loosen as I walk in them.
I enjoy wearing them so much that even though I purchased them solely for my outdoor walks, I've been wearing them every time I get a chance (to the grocery, baseball games, school functions, etc). If only they came styled as a professional work shoe as well.
I bought a pair of the men's version for my husband, and he enjoys wearing them as well. He also expressed a preference for the wool socks over cotton, which surprised me as he usually avoids wool, claiming it is too itchy.

I purchased the Salomon XA Pro 3D Ultra 2 because I owned an earlier generation of the same shoe and found them to be so durable and up to the task that I knew I wanted to stick with the same shoe when it was time to replace them.Keep in mind, these are not a road shoe so if you are accustomed to running on pavement these may feel a little clunky at first, but trust me, you will want and need the support that these shoes will give you when you head out onto the trails. There are other trail shoe options out there that will be lighter and more nimble. It just depends on what uses you need them for. For the range of outdoor activities I enjoy, this heavier more durable XA Pro 3D Ultra 2 is the perfect fit. Great ankle support for uneven ground, tree roots, etc. Roomy toe box. Very breathable. Excellent traction. Highly durable design. My favorite features are the quick lace system and the protected toe box.
Because I love a deal, the starting price of $130 was hard for me to justify, so I waited, kept my eyes peeled and before I knew it they were reduced to around $85. Truth be told, if I had paid $130 they would still be worth every penny as I know they'll be my go-to outdoor shoe for probaby another 3 years or more!
These will definitely stand up to the trail. I put mine through a lot, from trail running to backpacking, to just running around town. They'll last years. And, if they're caked in mud you know you're using them to their full potential!
