I usually wear `80s-style running shoes, but this summer I wanted to go even more retro and get some canvas high tops. Converse and some of the other better-known brands had some flashy styles and patterns that looked fun, but when I actually checked them out in-store I was amazed at how noticeably shoddy even the models on display were: the foxing (side rubber strip) and toes were poorly vulcanized and looked like they'd start separating in weeks, not months, and most of the soles were made of a hard rubber with a strange flocked treatment that looked and felt dangerously slippery.
So in the end, for about $5 more than my local store was selling Chuck Taylors, I went with the PF Flyers Center Hi. These are visibly better-made than most of the canvas sneakers I've seen in stores, and a good deal more comfortable. They look as though they'd be narrow, but the toe is surprisingly roomy. I have to stick in some orthopedic arch supports for my high arches, but otherwise the insole is well-padded and comfortable. If you're used to shoes with thick EVA midsoles like the Reebok Classic running shoes (which I also love), they take awhile to get used to, but you'll love them once you do.
After getting these, I recommend looking around online for sites with alternate lacing methods, both for fun and more practical reasons. For instance, I use a wider criss-cross pattern to make them fit comfortably around my higher instep.
Also, a nice little touch: pull out the insoles and look in your shoes for a little green square of fabric...

The picture is the incorrect shoe, but I did get the all black on black shoe with the green, and white PF emblem. I wore these just a few times, but they are comfortable. They form a lot better on your foot that Converse/Chuck Taylors do. I wore them around all day just to do errands, and I felt fine. I played a game of Baseball (of course), and they felt fine. You will have to order your shoe a little smaller in size than normally. I usually wear an 11. I ordered these in 9. They fit like a glove.

PF Flyers are really comfortable shoes that give a lot more support than I expected. They are much better that chucks and feel like they are made better also.
