The shoes are made from what looks to be like a synthetic material. This material is fairly flexible and allows toes and the mid-foot to bend easily. On extended bike rides with cleats clipped in, this subtle yet important feature makes for a very comfortable ride. The three straps close with velcro as is the standard. Regarding sizing, I wear 9.5 size and bought 43 in these shoes, perfect fit.
I am using these shoes with the following cleats and pedals:
Cleats Shimano SH56 SPD Cleat Set highly recommend these cleats. They are a breeze to clip in and are low profile making it easy to walk in them.
Pedals Shimano PD-M540 SPD Pedals low profile pedals that add very little weight. The combination with the above cleats is excellent.
With these cleats, the shoes remain relatively flat under the ball of the foot where the clips are attached to the shoes. This makes it comfortable to walk in these shoes for a long time without the cleats bothering the foot.

I have worn another model shimano MTB shoe size 46 for two seasons. So, I was confident that these would fit. Unfortunately, the length and width are right but the straps will not tighten down. It seems as though they are designed for someone with an extremely high arch because the uppers are just too loose but if I go down to a 45 I know the length will be too short cramping my toes. I have to wear thick socks and an extra arch support to get them to fit. I guess like everything else being manufactured today there seems to be no consistency from one product to another anymore. Too bad.
