Once you try this shoe, you can't go back. It has amazing support, I have narrow feet and high arches and they're a godsend, because I run xc & track at my school. I'm not sure if it has a connection, but I'm also one of the only kids who doesn't have shin splints. I recommend buying 1/2 to 1 size larger for extra comfort.
