I recently bought these Salomon Synapse "run your hike" (as Salomon refers to them) shoes to use for speed hiking. I suspect they'll work well for that purpose. The fit is very good, with plenty of room in the toe box for my toes to splay out. I used them a few days after my purchase in the Megatransect Ultrahike. The Mega is a rugged mountain hike nearly 6000' elevation gain (good for PA) in central PA over very (VERY!!) rocky terrain. The Synapses worked perfectly for my use. I hiked most of the race with a little running on the flatter, less rocky stretches. The sole construction afforded great grip on the rocks, good traction on the soft stuff, and great striding comfort. These are not a stout shoe so don't even think about backpacking with them! Also, they have no waterproof membrane so your feet will get wet in a hurry if you step in a deep puddle or shallow stream. The jury is out on the durability but I don't expect them to be long-lived if used in Mega-like terrain on a regular basis. If you want great durability, go with an Americanor Italian made leather boot.

I admit I have a Salomon fetish. I love Salomons. Did I say I love Salomons? I have the Women's Synapse in both the gray and the blue. Salomons are my preferred hiking shoe and these are now my favorite. The Salomon Synapse was worn when the thru hiking record for the Appalachian trail was broken. The toe box is a little wider than the Salomon crossmax trail runners since they are made for fast hiking (or leisurely hiking) and this prevents my toes from feeling squashed. My significant other has the men's Synapse in the greenish color and the men's crossmax neutral in blue gray he loves both of them. He tried other low hiking shoes at both REI and our local outdoor store and none were as comfortable as his old Salomons so he ordered the Synapse as well. Many people have given up both compliments on our shoes since they are generally not sold locally they are unique and stylish.
I also have the Salomon crossmax neutral in every color they make for women and other Salomons. I can color coordinate my Salomons to my outfit. I use the Synapse typically only for hiking and the crossmax neutrals as my everyday shoes.

This is my first pair of Salomons. So comfortable. I'm on my feet all day at work and I used to be in a fair amount of pain (foot and back) after work, but since I got this pair of shoes the difference is noticeable. These guys know what they are doing with their shoes. I will be a Salomon patron from now on.

great price that I got it for. Put it to the test on a 10 mile trail run through a single track rocky mountain, loose gravel trail laced up with no problems foot protection there. tread pattern excellent for the type of trail I'm on no hot spots or blisters Mind you I'm on the cactus 2 clouds trail in California in summer heat(yes 105 plus with humidity)toes protected up and down and shoe breathes good. will give review after 200 more miles of trail use...
