Make no mistake, Salewa is a distinctly expensive brand. However, shopping on Amazon for these has made the step very affordable. I feel already that the investment will be well rewarded, as they feel like they will last the test of time. I had a pair of Salomon XA Ultra GoreTex previously, but have found that, although the soles are agile and very flexible, they tend to deteriorate very quickly and the laminate on my last pair pulled away, leaving a big gaping hole between the upper and the sole (not what you want from a waterproof shoe). However, although it is early days, the design of these clearly defines that this won't likely happen. The sole is very solid, perhaps too solid for some. I see this as a decent compromise, considering that the grip is more than capable of dealing with slippery rocks. The Vibram sole also ensures that it's shock-absorbing capability does something towards those fatigued calves at the end of a day walking and bouldering.
All in all, very comfortable, wonderful design and a shoe which bridges the gap between an out-and-out mountain and casual shoe.

these are great shoes i use them for work some of which is metal roofing.
they grip and feel very stable.

Best hiking shoes I've owned! grip even in water on rocks fairly well, waterproof so long as it doesnt go above the black rim.
