We purchased the Adidas chip and think its fantastic. Not sure if they have improved it since they negative reviews but this is our experience.
My son plays premier soccer and literally is an animal with the wear and tear of his equipment. Big, rough and tough. So the chip has to be able to stand up to a pounding and it does.
* Setup incredibly easy my 10 year old set it up for my son and took her about 5 minutes. She downloaded the software from Adidas website micoach.com. Plugged the chip into side of computer. Registered my son as new user. Tapped the chip and it syncs. But, you need to sync before you workout for first time. Says so in manual, we were so anxious to get going who reads manuals!
* Data games, trainings all download immediately by tapping the shoe or boot. Its that easy.
* Battery have not yet needed to replace
* Our coaches change the trainings based on the results.
* Player knows how far they ran, sprinted, speed, how hard when etc. Great insight for a motivated athlete to know how to work harder or smarter
Other players in our team have also had no issues. We all bought in late 2012.
Fantastic dynamic read out for athlete details.

I'm horrible about reading instructions and we got this for my 11 year old son who plays soccer. He got tired of waiting for me to set it up so he did it and it worked right out of the package. We did get the one that connects to the iphone, so maybe that's easier to set up? So far, we're thrilled with the product.

My son got this for Christmas. It took him quite a bit of time and frustration to set it up and he's very tech savvy. It worked great for ONE basketball game. Data was interesting and retrieval was easy. The next time he tried it it gave an error message and hasn't worked since. We tried changing the battery no luck. No tech support that we can find ... would be a great product if it actually worked.
Honest reviews on Adidas miCoach Speed Cell for Apple Ipod and Iphone
I use micoach speed cell with the heart rate monitor almost every day. I'm an avid runner and dabble in cycling and I like to challenge myself to alway do better than my last. This handy gadget (paired with the app of course) changed my life (yes i do mean life). I bought my 1st one (along with my 1st pair of Vibrams shoes) maybe 3 years ago when I was still struggling to make running a habit, and the voice coaching was exactly what I needed. I'm pretty into electronics & apps so believe me when I tell you that I'd tried almost everything to get me moving without too much distraction and this is hands down the best! For a moment, I switched to a Android cell device (as I mentioned, I like electronics) but i quickly went back to iPhone mostly because there's not a droid compatible micoach device (shame on them for that). But anyway, this product/app, Vibrams Shoes, and my own will has been the key to shaving 3 MINUTES OFF of my 1.5 timed run for AF fitness requirements. Years ago I was winded after running what I thought was a respectable 14:45 1.5 mile run, but 5 months ago I did the same test in 11:14 and last month I tested myself and did it 10:45! I have a love/hate relationship with the programmed voice that tells me "Speed up to ___" when i fall below the pace i set for myself but I always appreciate the push in the end :-D

Everywhere you look, this speedcell for ipod and iphone is advertized (by Adidas, here, Apple Store etc) as being compatible with 2nd gen iPod touch. Even the literature in the package says it is compatible with 1st and 2nd gen. However, since the apps were updated to version 2.1 back in July-Aug 2012 by Adidas, they are only compatible with 3rd gen or later. Unfortunately, no product info on this MiCoach speedcell tells you this, and if fact, most product info says that the apps ARE compatible with 2nd gen. Only if you go to itunes app store and research the apps' compatibility will you learn this. I learned that the older version of the MiCoach app (version 2.0.1) is no longer offered, and so contacted both Apple and Adidas and there are currently no plans to offer it. So now my son's Christmas gift, which I bought back in October and therefore can no longer return, is totally useless unless I fork out $300 for a new ipod....no thanks. If you plan to use this with a 1st or 2nd gen ipod touch, save your money.
