I grew up practically barefoot on dirt roads and even as an adult always preferred shoes with minimal "support". I had no idea til recently that there were shoes designed to feel like you're barefoot! I did a lot of research and eventually settled on these based on appearance, style, and most importantly, price! When I first opened them up and put them on the fit was pretty darn snug and I was concerned I got a size too small. I'm about an 8-8.5 in women's shoes and got the XS figuring too tight was better than too big. I could feel how supportive the bands were and felt pretty comfortable in them right away (minus a little tightness). After a few hours to a day of wearing them though they relaxed slightly and now they fit me PERFECTLY.

I have been wearing them for about a month now nearly all day every day. They're so comfortable and so unobtrusive that I've crawled into bed a few times with them on and didn't even think about it! I haven't had any issues at all about walking on various terrains. They provide exactly as much protection as you need to not get hurt or be bothered by walking on acorns, rocks, or whatever without taking away the feeling of being practically barefoot. I give them 4 stars though because I'm disappointed that the lycra touches the ground on all sides and after the month of wearing them a little rip has formed in the toe. I have done my share of walking on sidewalks, indoors, outdoors, and everywhere in between, but I was definitely hoping they'd last a little longer. I sew, so I'll be reinforcing the toe myself, but it'd be nice if they were more durable.

I hear ZemGear is coming out with a running shoe in which the sole will come up and around so the lycra does NOT touch the ground. I'm definitely in line for those! I've read other reviews of people complaining about the seams being uncomfortable. When I first tried them on, the heel seem was much narrower than my heel (I have wide feet all around) and I was concerned I'd have a similar experience, but I found that the more I wore them the softer the seems got. They haven't bothered me since that first day. I even wore these to Warrior Dash through mud, water, sand, and crazy obstacles and they held up exceptionally well. The small rip in the toe turned into a slightly larger one, but no other wear and tear at all! Everyone else had to throw away their shoes after the race and I just through mine in the wash! I wasn't bogged down my lots of mud in my shoes either!

Overall, I recommend these shoes for anyone wanting to live a "barefoot" lifestyle. I think these are perfect for your every day use and the options of styles and colors allow you to match your wardrobe. I've only had a couple people in the last month comment on them, so I wouldn't worry about too many people asking if you're just wearing socks *lol*. I'd like to try the ninja toe shoes next...in aqua! Thanks ZemGear! (hurry up with the running shoe would ya?!)

I bought these shoes intending to use them in my barefoot running journey, but these shoes although they pop up on barefoot running are not designed for any hard work. I wore mine out in less than 2 weeks, and noticed holes in them within the first week. I have not even started the serious part of my workout program.

Unless you are planning to use these shoes leisure activities don't purchase.

Initially, I loved these shoes. They were comfortable and easy to get on. I wore them once to work and after one day of wear on a carpeted floor they were already worn very badly on the heel and toe. I wore them for the second time, walked less then a mile on concrete sidewalks and had a hole in the heels and toes on both shoes.

Terrible waste of money.

I've been taken with the barefoot / minimal shoe running craze and really like it. I typically start off running barefoot for as long as my feet can take it (asphalt street), then don my shoes that I've been carrying. I've tried the Vibram FiveFingers (Sprint model), the Luna sandals (Original model), and now the ZemGear (Playa model). I can say that I prefer the ZemGear at this time for the following reasons: 1) the ZemGears are the easiest to put on fast while in the middle of the run. 2) they are SUPER comfortable; much more so than the Fivefingers and even the Lunas. 3) no fussy toe pockets (FiveFingers) or fussy straps (Lunas) 4) they are lighter than the FiveFingers and maybe the Lunas, too. They are more like a sock. I hear they will deteriorate fast so we will have to see about that. My one-star deduction is that you can feel the upper/lower seam inside with your foot but I see why they designed it that way. It's a trade-off.

I really wanted these shoes so bad but their platform base is tiny! Like seriously T I N Y. I mean sure I have wide feet but I'm not a Hobbit. My feet hung over the sides so badly. The length was perfect, the width, a disaster. These are advertised for people with wide feet on their website through faq but don't trust it. I'm really dissapointed.
