These are almost the perfect hiking boot for me. I'm so sick of getting blistered up in big leather "pain machines". Just did a 3 day backpacking trip with nary a hot spot. The problem is Merrell's proprietary waterproof-breathable membrane is for sure waterproof but lacking on the breathable part. These boots get pretty clammy. If they made these with eVent or Gore-Tex they might be the perfect hiking boot. As they are, they are still pretty sweet and I think this barefoot running shoe kind of hiking boot will be the future. Really, do we need clomp stomping big ol' leather pain machines to know that we're in the woods? Nay. Overall, well done Merrell. Just let someone else do the membrane.

Generally a very good trail shoe. I was after something that gave a little more ankle support without increasing the weight significantly. Downside is that the tread doesn't grip as much as I would like for the rocky trails I run. Also the insole is very smooth causing some movement in the shoe, which gets worse as the moisture level increases.

I tried on rock laden trails, and this shoe is no match to the Saucony Pro Grid Outlaw. The saucony cushions ones feet from the rocks totally! The Merrell Men's Mix Master Mid , I'll use on rock-free trails.Yes I would recommend this shoe to friends and family.

As advertised, this shoe is as close to minimalist as you can get and still be comfortable on rough,slippery, "rooty" and bony terrain. Grips well, good support on inclines up and down, and the high-back keeps tons of trail debris out of your shoes. Very waterproof but not overly hot even in fairly warm weather. My only criticism would be that the sole provides just a little too much feedback on trails that have a lot 1-2 inch stones. That criticism said, I would buy another pair in a second, though I'd like to see the price come down some! Really nice over-all shoe for dyed-in-the-wool trail dogs!
