This is a great Trail Shoe. I run off road trail races, Mud Races, Spartan Races etc. These shoes see it all, from Mud, to rocks, to Hills, and Slippery Trails. They perform great in all of these conditions. I have better traction with these then almost anyone else on the trail. Running at Full Speed down a muddy, slippery hill, when everyone else is reduced to a slow walk is great. The only issue that I have is that when fully submerged in water, They do not drain very well due to all the side protection. I would like some outlets for the water, and this would be a 5 star shoe. The MudClaw 265's look like they will drain better, but are a 3mm drop, instead of the 6mm drop on this shoe. I like the 6mm drop though. My next purchase may be the 265's though to see if the 3mm makes a difference to me or not, but with better drainage.

They run a bit on the larger size for me, so I did not go up the usual 1/2 size on running shoes with this one.

Recommendation: I always wash in the washing machine after each race,and hang dry. They look brand new still.

Like all Ecco shoes, these fit my feet perfectly. I ordered the Trail Shoes because I walk 5 miles every day, over hill and dale, gravel, concrete, uneven pavement... I need a good quality shoe with plenty of support; I weigh 265 lbs and I'm hard on shoes. I think Trail Shoes are designed to better handle abuse than, say, your average pair of sneakers or running shoes. I put over 500 hard miles on my last pair before finally wearing the heels down. I like everything about this new pair. They feel good and are very comfortable as I walk. They breathe well, look casual nice, and hopefully will last as long as my previous pair.

Discount Saucony Men's Progrid Guide TR4 Trail Running Shoe

I am a long time fan and supporter of Saucony. As a neutral runner with very slight under probation tendencies I am fortunate that I can wear almost any shoe and I have tried many of the Saucony lines: Guide series, Ride series (favorite), Jazz series (2nd favorite), Triumph series, Echelon series and the Xodus Trail Running series. All fantastic and exceptional value.

That being said there are occasions (like ALL major Co.'s) where quality control is an issue. If you ever come across a review where someone complains about stitching, weak/poor glue etc. I hope you will use logic and common sense and remember that the majority of our country's favorite products are made overseas and the factory workers could really care less about us (the consumer). Trueinspections and standards can increase, but then so does the manufacturing/labor costs and that ultimately means our purchase price as well.

Here on Amazon we are lucky to get incredible deals on older items, so I hope that everyone will keep these things in mind before going off half-cocked and complaining about single-instance issues.

I gave the Guide 4 TR (trail) shoe 3 stars only because it seems to be lost/confused in terms of what kind of shoe it should be. Since it is a heavier shoe (as most trail shoes are) I am not complaining about the weight, or anything trivial. The upper is nicely constructed and quite attractive. For some reason only the heel is reinforced for durability so other than having closed mesh and slight water resistance, this shoe looks as though it was designed for light trail running. Howeveryou can perform light trail running with every good running shoe already. The sole has a good pattern, but not aggressive enough for heavy trails. No rock plates either, but still stiff nevertheless, but then it's curious that the shoe is so shallow inside with no room for thick socks, or any orthotic thicker than the stock one, which makes the feel very uncomfortable even after a break-in period. The ankles sit high and there is slight heel slippage at a modest pace and a lot of slippage on steep inclines. Since the sole is soft rubber, it wears very quickly on pavement unless you gave smooth concrete streets and sidewalks where you live.

Therefore it's not a road shoe, nor a trail shoe, and as a hybrid it's somewhat of a failure. It does look nice, but that's about it. I wouldn't recommend it, but it's an older model anyway.

I've been buying Saucony running shoes for years now. They're they best as far as I'm concerned. The only caveat is that you usually have to buy them one to 1.5 sizes larger than your normal size. The shoes always fit like a glove and don't require a break-in period. Unlike other athletic shoes, I've never had a pair of Sauconys give me a blister. They also seem to last for a reasonable time.

I wore these shoes once so far.

Right out of the box, they looked bizarre. On the foot and walking around, they look okay.

But the point is, they are stability shoes with an arch, and they have it. Therefore, they are quite comfortable and that makes up for the minor flaws.

Two minor flaws though. My toes feel squished, and the whole shoe constricted my circulation a little bit while sitting down. The circulation constriction is probably fixable I just haven't loosened the laces yet! The other flaw is that you'll experience abrasion on your heel if you wear ankle socks. I've experienced both these problems with other shoes so i'm a bit more tolerable of it...

For $40, an excellent shoe.

I've been walking the dirt trails near my house for several years wearing various shoes and boots. Recently I stared Nordic Walking and increased my pace so I thought that I needed a shoe designed for trail walking. I've always liked Puma because they run narrow and I have a B-C width foot. These are narrow, too, but not a true C width. They lace up tightly, have good rocker and flexibility to the sole and good cushioning in the heel. The sole tread pattern grips nicely.

Yes, they are every bit as ugly in person but that seems to be the current trend in athletic shoes

The hard "rocker sole" promises to support a smooth stride, and maybe provide some additional exercise. The shoe is beautifully made, as are all Mephisto shoes. But the design has two serious problems: [1] the "rocker" sole makes standing unstable (perhaps forcing you to continually rebalance is part of the promised exercise), and [2] running is impossible. Of course, it's not sold as a running shoe, but if you have to run even a few steps, it will feel like you have wooden blocks strapped to your feet. I threw mine away.

I have narrow to normal foot and these are a bit big/wide. Nice cushioning, but it is a bit sloppy for me. I have tied them tighter to help with this and it does help, but still a bit loose.

I have always been a New Balance fan because I have very wide feet and they have wide widths in this and many of their other models. I have also been wearing the 990, 991, 993, etc. series of shoes for about 25 years and always loved them. I even got the NB 2002 model a year or so ago and it just did not feel that good, but I decided to give these NB 2040 a try anyway. I am glad I did because they fit wonderfully. I also got the new 990 model and they are nice but not up to the fit and comfort level of this 2040 model. They are easily the best shoes I have ever had and it is a bonus that they are made in the USA. They are expensive but I think they are worth it.

I own a shoe store, have for 43+ years. I carry all the "top shelf" items. This shoe doesn't look like it should be any better than hundreds of other items we carry, but it is !! From the moment you put them on you can really feel the comfort and support differences between these and the less expensive products. $250+ is a lot to pay, for that matter so is $150. My feet have quite a few miles on them, I started to think that I needed to realize after 60 years of walking etc. you WILL have some discomforts that no amount of money spent on footwear can relieve.......boy was I wrong. I can wear these all day (on thin-no padding carpet, and concrete) and if I need my most comfortable pair of shoes for afterwork activities, the M2040 can handle that too. I am ordering a pair in the "new" black color (due in 5/1) this is my new "go to" shoe that I will want on all trips too. It's a lot of money, but don't skimp when it comes to your feet.

I'm a heavy runner; 220+ pounds and run 20-30 miles per week. New Balance is the ONLY shoe that I have found that protects my knees and provides total comfort during the run. The quality is everything you would expect from a USA manufactured shoe. Sure it's expensive and there may be another shoe out there that might provide comparable fit and comfort but I'm not looking. I have a pair of Adidas Terrex XCR Goretex/Leather shoes that I love. Sadly, I wore the soles off the bottom of them well to the point they were failing me on the trail. I was looking for a shoe with similar qualities (low cut but stable, waterproof, sure footed and not too heavy). The Terrex Fast R hits these categories though not as competently without modification. Namely, I found the drawstring laces too finicky and I never felt really secure no matter how hard I tugged on those pesky things. These shoes aren't cheap so it's not lightly that I decided to cut these things out, but I was quite happy with the other shoe characteristics, so I gave it a go. Simple enough, I cut the drawstrings and replaced them with nylon athletic laces. That made a big difference to the feel of the shoe adding stability and having an all-around better fit to my foot which is slightly narrow.

Overall, very pleased with the shoes. They have served me well on both intermediate local hikes and longer ones like Old Rag Mountain. If these shoes last as long as my last pair (5 years or so of moderate to difficult day hikes), the price will be worth it.

This is my second pair....the first pair are still going (after 3 years of abuse) just the grip has worn out. Please note, I dont use them as trail running shoes, I prefer others. I use them as a general casual walking/hiking shoe. Great for winter, feet stay dry, extremely comfortable and well supported, the lace up system is super. Very rugged and look great. In fact the positives of this shoe are also a negative as a trail running shoe. It really depends on the clmate. I live in a warm climate, I used my first pair once on a trail run and all their pros became negatives. 1/ goretex not only keeps the wet out, but the sweat in. 2/ too heavy for trail running ....prefer much lighter shoes.3/ Sole is not very flexible, so tires out feet and calves on firm surfaces. That said, the fact I initially bought these shoes for trail running and have bought another pair speaks volumes.

I am on my fourth pair of these. They are my shoe.

I chose this rating because they are very light, breath well and stylish.

The amount of time that shoes last vary a great deal on everyone individually. For me they last about a year.

I wear these shoes year around because they are ideal for my job as well as recreation.

I have had the mesh and the non-mesh versions. These are the partially more expensive non-mesh.

They feel comfortable and easy to tighten.

CONS:

traction wears faster than I'd like.

After while the toe splits from the rubber base below. But that might be just because I am hard on shoes.

There is always a price point in any company's running shoe line where there are diminishing returns beyond that price. For new balance its the 1226. For Brooks its the Adrenaline GTS 11. Out pacing them all is the ASICS GTS 2160. I own the Asics gel Nimbus 12 and the Kayano 17. For the money the sweet spot in their lineup is the 2160. Asics just keeps getting it right with this 2100 series shoe. I will go out on a limb and state their is no better running shoe in the world at this price point. Cushioning is top notch. The stitching and design of the uppers is excellent. The interior materials are also a grade above most running shoes. I have other shoes like the Nike Vomero 5, a slew of New Balance shoes and a slew of Brooks runners. I bought this shoe in all Black thinking it was a lower end Asics product and I would use it as a walking shoe. Boy was I wrong. You can pay more but you won't get more. Since I got this shoe I did some additional research and found out I was not the only one who knew the secret about this shoe. In fact ASICS sells more 2100 series shoes than any other shoe in the world. The problem with these shoes is once you put them on you won't want to take them off. It feels great walking running working and hiking. Very light and flexible but still with enough support to make even the finicky runner happy. This is the top seller and now I know why and you do too. Quality at a discount price. Can somebody make an all Brown running shoe so I can wear them to work !! I have not considered buying the same model running shoe from any company. This is likely a repeat purchase. I need a good excuse. My wife thinks I've lost my mind with all these running shoes. Truth is these shoes will make you want to run 7 days a week. And isn't that the point in the first place.

I have worn the ASICS GT-21XX shoes for years now and the 2160 is the same old reliable shoe in this product line. Just started running and initially got the NB 993's as they were rated well here. I live in a rural area so couldn't try on running shoes.

Big mistake.

I went to a runner store in VA and went through the fitting process.

I tried on NB, Brooks, Asics, and several models of each.

The 2160's felt more molded/supportive to my feet than anything else including the Kayano 17's.

I have worn the 2160's now several times and each time I run in them I thank myself for getting them!

I don't mind spending $150 or so on a running shoe, but this $100 shoe was superior to me.

Everyone's feet are different so head to a store if you can.

Give these a try if you want 'stability' running shoes.
