I am by no means an avid runner, especially when it comes to long distances. I ran track in high school for much shorter distances and the only care I took regarding shoes was the length of my spikes. I read as much as I could regarding the barefoot and minimalist running shoes. I think I really lucked out with my first pair, which was the New Balance MT20 (got them in Orange since there was a sale). I love those shoes. I was sore everyday that I used them in leg muscles I never knew existed. But that felt great! And I can definitely see the difference in my legs, too. I'm up to six miles and should be approaching ten soon (in preparation for that stupid half marathon).
I read that the New Balance Zero (the shoe I am currently reviewing) had exactly thatzero pitchso I decided to order a pair. Just got them yesterday and took them out for a 4-mile test drive. These shoes feel great. More barefoot than the MT20s. Super light. They look great, too. Not like most of the barefoot running shoes. The only drawback is the tongue is a little flimsy, so when you slip on the shoes, the tongue folds in on you. You have to put them on carefully and flatten out the tongue. It took a few extra minutes to get them to feel comfortable. Additionally, I put them on barefoot but they felt extremely uncomfortable (the MT20s felt great barefoot). It's because of these two things I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.
Regarding size, you should order a half size smaller than your usual size if you plan to run barefoot or wear thin running socks. If you tend to wear thick socks when you run, order your normal size.
Enjoy!

I bought a pair of these last week and took them Camping with my son this past weekend. I also bought a pair of traditional lightweight low-rise hikers in the hopes that the traditional hikers would provide more support for trail work and the lightweight MT00 would be for "in-camp" use and shorter day hikes.I hiked the first day hike in the traditional hikers and was pleased with their performance, then upon returning to camp swapped out with these ultralight trail running shoeWOW I was pleasantly suprised by not only the comfort, but the sheer thrill of having a shoe that felt like nothing on my feet!
The next three days I lived in these minimalist shoes and loved it! I wore them around camp and on two additional day-hikes. I didn't have any trouble with supportalthough the trails weren't anything more than moderate at best.
The only thing that was of minor concern was the flexibility of the sole provided little support when stepping on sharp objects in the arch of my foot. It only took a few sharp root projections or stones before I started avoiding these "sharper" surfaces with the archinstead either stepping clear of the object, or using the ball of my foot to engage the root or other object.
I'll revisit this review after I've taken some longer, more difficult hikes.

I never had this problem with any pair of shoes before, to have the top mesh torn out within the 1st month, I guess that's a very bad sign for the quality of this new balance shoes. And the worst part is that it got torn about 5 days after the return period , so now I guess I need to pay for shipping them back only to be partially refunded.
