I have been a New Balance customer for many years. I have worn the W1123 shoe for the past 6 years. I love the 1123 due to having the higher and deeper toe box. I am a diabetic and have to be very careful with my feet. The W1540 was described as the updated version to the 1123 with the same toe box features. I found this not to be the case. After trying them on, the shoes began to make my toes hurt and I ended up with what looked like a bruise from the shoe hitting my toe in the wrong way. I will stick with the 1123! I am very disappointed this new version is NOT what it was cracked up to be.

I'm surprised by the rating distribution for this product. I have never had shoes that were more supportive.

I have a history of plantars fasciitis and painful heel spurs. I have practically no arch. I also have fairly severe hallux rigidus, aka 'turf toe.' In layman's terms: my big toes have significantly reduced range of motion; they don't flex backwards. This can be caused/exacerabated by harshly "stubbing" the toe and/or jamming the big toe into too small a toe box.

I expect my feet to hurt... and never knew any shoe to prove otherwise. Until these.

It's owing to their comfortable fit that I happily increased my walking distance. Previously, I couldn't tolerate strolling beyond 2 miles, because my feet hurt too much. I *hated* walking on loose surfaces (e.g. sand). Now I easily walk 4-5 miles. Any distance limitation is now owing only to a finite attention span and time constraints. I walk in a steeply hilly area, on roads that are NOT well-maintained (no sidewalks). Excepting some manageable, residual pain on one horricially calcified big toe... these shoes have provided me great relief and rehabilitation.

What we habitually wear on our feet greatly impacts what we're *able* to wear on our feet. I'm someone who's been prone to wearing low heels, flats, or going 'commando.' (Barefoot is one of the worst choices for someone with plantars fasciitis, I know.) I have wide feet (D-width) but like to tightly lace my tennies. These shoes have a roomy toe box but an overall snugness that I tend to prefer.

If your circumstances are similar to mine... I suspect these shoes will work well for you, too.

I've worn the 1123 style for years. I bought these because they were supposed to be an updated model to the 1123. They fit much differently; the heels are too wide and the tips of my toes rub against the shoe. I got a pretty bad blister on the tip of my toe after walking just a couple of miles. I can't wear them again. I want my 1123s back!

I'm a 105 lb. casual runner, averaging 10-15 miles per week. I've worn the New Balance 1123 for several years now and bought the 1540 because it's the "upgraded" version of the 1123. The 1123 and 1540 have a similar fit and provide the same motion stability; however the 1540 is a much stiffer shoe through the sole. I've had knee and foot pain from running in the 1540 that I never experienced with the 1123. I want to like this shoe because the style is much more contemporary and the fit is snug, but the shoe is too uncomfortable to run in. I now only walk in these shoes and run with a pair of Sauconys. I'm disappointed New Balance no longer makes the 1123.

I purchased this shoe not knowing what to expect as I was so used to the 1123 model. This is a "step" above the 1123 and love walking in them. I put in about 5-6 miles a day and absolutely love the comfort of this shoe!
