At the time of writing this review this was the only shoe in the market with the following 3 features combined: Barefoot, Hi Boot and Waterproof. Merrell has Barefoot and waterproof (Gore-tex)but not Hi boot then barefoot and Hi boot but not waterproof.

I took this shoe for a spin in the smokies for a 13 miles crossing streams up and down about 2500 feet elevation:

Barefoot: good, could definitely be more flexible.

Waterproof: Very bad.

Durability: Very bad.

Price: Very overpriced for the quality of the product.

You can't help hitting rocks and tree trunks going downhill and after the hike i saw a whole in the glue that is attaching the sole to the leather at the front the shoe. I contacted amazon for exchange but this is very inconvenient.

The only place for this shoe is Dollar general.

I bought these shoes for a hike and they arrived late (no fault of the item and Amazon made it right) so I put them away until recently because it was winter. Last week I took them on a 6 hour hike for about 5K of vertical gain over 10 miles and they are completely ruined. The sole is separating from the nose of the boot, ~20% of the tread ripped away on the right shoe, and the inside heel ripped.

I am fairly certain these are outside of the return policy so I will have to absorb the cost but I will seriously consider buying anything from this brand again.

Got the shoes quickly, they fit perfectly out of the box. No break in required and the first walk I took in them just felt "right." I have worn them now for a couple of weeks and simply dread having to put on shoes with any kind of heel for suit wear or whatever. THESE are the future! Love 'em! They appear very well made and will probably stand the test of time. I am going into the hills with them very soon and will give them a real workout. Tread is aggressive and grips amazingly on everything outside...inside, not so much if they are wet. They are expensive, but for the barefoot revolution, they are the closest I have found to a hiking boot in this genre. I will get more as the line develops.

Honest reviews on Vivobarefoot Men's Off Road Hi Hiking Boot

I have been a barefoot enthusiast for several years, but I faced a test when deciding what hiking boot to wear during my recent trip to summit Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (19,341'). I ended up getting this pair as it was the only barefoot style true hiking boot I could find, but I was nevertheless nervous. Our summit of Kili involved about 7 days up and 3 days down, with 4-6 hours of climbing each day. Temperatures ranged from rainforest to arctic (well below zero). Terrain was everything you can imagine from mud to rocks to scree to snow and ice to sand. I really didn't want to be half way up the mountain and have my boots disintegrate on me. The head guide wondered why I didn't have one of the 4-5 brands that the rest of the team had, but by the end of the trip he was impressed. These boots did everything I could ask of them. Were waterproof but breathable. The ankle support was excellent and most surprising was the excellent traction. And I didn't have to deal with the arch pain I get with conventional shoes and boots. At the end of the trip after scrubbing all the mud off the boots, I checked them out for wear and tear and nothing visible. So I couldn't be happier with these boots and grateful for the option.

These boots feel great to walk around in. So far I have only taken short hikes in them and I have liked them so far, but I will be testing them out on Old Rag in Virginia in the next few weeks. I will report back after that whether they hold up.

I like that they are made from some recycled/plant material. As far as looks, they aren't the prettiest. but that's obviously a secondary concern for anyone interested in minimalist footwear. I almost exclusively wear minimalist shoes and compared to other shoes and even other Vivobarefoot shoes, these aren't terrible.
