I haven't run all winter because the roads here are very icy. I can hardly walk on them, much less run on them, without slipping. I figured I would give spikes a try...what did I have to loose but weight?! I owned a pair of nike spikes YEARS ago when running on the hs x-country team, so I couldn't quite remember the specifics on them. These have a wider toe base then most spikes I looked at. Not as wide as I would like, but better then most. I made sure to order a size 8, which I would usually choose for running shoes, though spikes can usually be good for 1/2 size smaller, but I ordered these in the 8 bc I didn't want the toes too tight. They fight pretty perfect. Of course, being spikes, the material is next to nothingvery thin and light weight, which is good (cold but good). The bottoms are very stiff, which again is normal (and needed) for spikes, though I would much prefer light and flexible. These spikes CAME WITH the wrench to add and remove the spikes. I did order a separate thing of 1/4" spikes to keep on hand and I'm glad I did bc after my first run many of the spikes were already half gone/warn off. I do have to say that I ran a mile on my first run and didn't slip AT ALL! The traction was great. I don't use a heel strike while running, so not having spikes on the heel didn't affect me. It was rather loud running (ice and spikes), which was different for me not being able to hear my surroundings at all. But I am very pleased with these spikes and thrilled that I can get out there and run again. I don't plan on using these when the ice is gone, but for wintertime I am thrilled.
