I've been a long time OT fan but never gave the California 78 a try. I usually wear Ultimate 81s. In comparison the 81 feels like it has slightly more "give" in its step, while the 78 feels a little more supportive while being nearly as comfortable. The forefoot is just as roomy and there's more cushioning on toe push off. It feels less fatiguing in a wear it all day way.

Its also likely to be more durable. The 81s are a "cradled sock" design and depending on what material the "sock" its made of. Its either long lasting (nylon) or more comfortable and fast wearing (meshed fabric). The 78 is just nylon and distressed leather, like a running shoe/ soccer boot hybrid. It feels like you can really kick around with it.

The grip of the rubber sole is also much better and has more traction, something the 81s never did well. While the rounded heel designed for the runner's stride, works well as a sort of "driver's heel". Creating a nice stable pivot point to operate the pedals in a car (clutch/heel~toe,etc.).

The fit is roughly the same as other OT products like the 81 with a fast break in. But the toe is pointed so it feels like there's a 1/4 inch more length than it should have; so maybe order a 1/2 size down. And the heel doesn't hold to the foot on push off that well. Probably do to the sole being a bit stiffer and needs to be more broken in. Lastly the lime green stripes don't photograph well. Its more of a faded yellow/lime green in normal light that "yellows out" more in sunlight.

These run big, but I still like them!

I settled on a size 7-1/2, which is my normal size, but they fit a tad bigger than my other 7-1/2s. I think that might be, in part, because they have a more pointed design that adds additional toe space--VS the Ultimate 81, for example, which is rounder at the toe. Adding to the bigness, I think, might be the width. My feet don't slide around in them, but they do feel a tad wider than other styles. Visually, that's not obvious... probably because of the design.

I settled on my normal size, but I think most people would be comfortable going down a half size.

The colors ARE reminiscent VINTAGE. The logo stripes are a mustard color with metallic hints. The stripes on the sole are yellow (not the same color as the logo stripes).

I like these shoes and recommend them. In fact, I'm looking for another color.
