The tread is aggressive enough to handle the leaf beds, rocks, and roots of SW Virginia trails. It handles slick and broken ground with ease. There is plenty of grab for those long, tough uphills, and just enough cushioning to help fight gravity on some of the steeper downgrades. I've put in about 85 miles on this pair of shoes so far. They are very comfortable and relatively light. I'm not noticing any wear on the soles yet.
Note: I have not tried these shoes on the road. They're billed as a hybrid, but I don't want to wear down all that nice tread too quickly. I just don't see the tread on these shoes holding up to any significant road use.
For the trail; however, I have not found a better shoe.

I am not exaggerating when I say this has got to be one of the best road/trail hybrid shoes available. Having said that, I am excited for the shoe that will replace it, the Fluid Balance. But it will be a really long time before I am running in it because I have two pairs of the Fairhaven and love them.Best Deals on Montrail Men's Fairhaven Running Shoe
I really like these trail shoes that Montrail have offered. They're extremely comfortable and lightweight. The tread design on the soles look like they are made for easier trails and that's all I've used them for. I have also enjoyed running on roads with them since they are hybrids after all. My feet get a little sore after 20+ mile runs maybe because they are so soft but I recently did a 50 K in them and have no complaints. I will definitely wear these again!Bob
