I have a very wide foot (6W) and a high instep, causing me to have a hard time finding sports footwear of many sorts. Although this show is not marketed as a wide shoe, it fits me perfectly. I bought it one metric size larger (48) than my true size (47), but this is what I do with every shoe (even a 4W New Balance tennis shoe).

This is my first pair of road biking shoes so I may not be the best person to judge it's biking shoe merits, but after 200 miles of biking I am very happy with the shoe.

Besides the color scheme and the soles, these are very similar to the very popular M087 and R087 Shimano shoes, which are excellent shoes themselves. These have a nice fit, and the straps provide easy adjustment, especially the ratcheting strap which you can adjust mid ride even.

Like the M087, the cleat is SPD-compatible only. I have some old Ultegra pedals from before the Shimano started pushing the SPD-SL, so this worked well for me. Running SPD on your road bike may also be preferable so that you can match systems with your mountain bike or casual commuter bike, and the cleats are recessed so you can walk around in them without ruining the cleat or the floor. Don't plan any extended strolls though, with a shoe this stiff it is still awkward to walk in. The rubber on the heel seems shorter than the rubber on the heel of a shoe like the M087, which makes walking a bit worse than those. On the R087, you can put SPD cleats on, but walking on them is extremely hard on the cleats, worse than the large road style cleats, so these are definitely a better alternative if that is your plan.

As for size, this can vary from shoe line to shoe line, so I would definitely check these out at a bike shop before buying them online.

I recently bought this SH-RT82 shoe to replace my MTB shoe that I have been using with the SPD pedal on my road bike (CAAD10.1). I wanted something that looks like a road shoe that you can actually walk normally in for the occasional pit stops at the bakery/deli to refuel after a long ride. The MTB shoe I wore before were heavy and clunky looking with the oversized lugged sole which I never needed because I ride on pavement not trails. In comparison, this touring shoe is 100g lighter.

I am 5'7" and normally wear a size 8.5 wide and this model's size 42 fit me perfectly in both width and length. The shoe is very well made with synthetic materials and no obvious quality defects. The sole is very supportive and stiff. I wore this shoe shortly after I bought it on a 100km ride with four cat 4 climbs and I had no issue with "hot foot" or discomfort even though the shoe is not entirely broken in. The racheting strap on the top makes it very easy to adjust the fit while on the bike. The racheting straps also hold very firm and does not come loose even after several hours of hard riding, unlike my old MTB shoe which only has velcro straps. The shoe came with the nut plates to mount your cleats but does not come with the SPD cleats themselves so you will have to buy them separately.

Overall, I am very happy with this purchase and will buy another extra pair soon to keep in reserve in case Shimano decides to discontinue this model.

Does everything an SPD road shoe should and looks great to boot. The first pair were too small (45) so I sent them back and swapped for 46s which are just right. Not sure if Shimano sizing is small, but I normally wear a 45.

Recessed clip is handy for walking without scraping or sliding on your floors. The combo velcro and ratchet closures keep the shoe on firmly with good adjustability and quick exit.

Would recommend.

I ride road bikes in the East Bay hills across from San Francisco where I live. I use public transportation, BART, to get to the hills where I start my ride. The problem was being able to carry my bike down the stairs on road cleats without killing myself . So I switched to SPD pedals a couple of years ago when they started making good quality "road" pedals [Shimano sells them as touring pedals, also see Sampson "Showtime" pedals] that accepted SPD cleats which meant you could use mountain bike shoes with recessed cleats. The problem with mb shoes is that they are a little heavy and the soles are less rigid to make them more "walkable." I recently started on the quest to find a shoe that still had recessed cleats but was a little lighter and more rigid than standard mb shoes. I ran across these shoes. They are the perfect compromise. Built for touring, not mountain biking, they weigh a little less, are a bit more rigid so more power goes to the pedal and less is spent compressing the sole but you can still walk easily enough. No, they are not road shoes so that is why road cleats don't work and the product description clearly says SPD cleats. But, if like me, you want to walk a lot easier even though you ride a road bike these shoes when paired with SPD road pedals fill the bill with no noticeable sacrifice in performance. Highly recommended.
