In our family we all seem to really wear down our heels a lot. The shoes are in good shape, but the heels are shot in no time and replacements nowadays are quite expensive, so we've started to use these heel plates as a way to give us a bit more wear on our shoes and that's worked very well for us.Shoe repair shops will charge $5 or more for a set of these and this offer was for 50 pair for less than the price of 6 pair. Okay, it's more than most of us need, but I have them now on 5 pair in my closet and have put them on several pairs of shoes for each of my daughters and my wife with another 39 pair in reserve as these wear down and already saved the a lot over what it would have cost to bring them to a shop to have done.
One problem I had was getting the right size heel tap. I bought the large, but they're not very big and I see now that I would have been happier with the extra large size for my shoes, while my girls probably would have preferred something smaller. The pictures online are not very helpful so if you have concerns, you might want to test by buying a smaller number of the different sizes before committing to a larger purchase like I did.
The heel plates however are simple to mount on your shoes. Simply peel off the paper backing and position them where you normally get the most wear on your heels. Then take out three of the included nails and hammer one into each hole of the tap. You might have a problem doing this without having a solid support to hammer the nail against. This is easily remedied using a small block of wood.. a small piece of 2x4 works well for most adult shoes...placed on the floor and then position one end inside the shoe under the heel. Took me maybe 15 minutes to do 5 pairs of shoes.
There are no instructions with this purchase and when you order, you'll probably find, like I did, that not all the nails are the same, which makes little sense to me. I got a bag of nails that were different sizes, diameters and lengths. I don't know if it makes much difference which ones you use where, but I ended up using the longer nails on the outside of the heel plates and a shorter one in the middle.
They work fine and I'm happy with the product which was shipped quite quickly, but even a rudimentary explanation on how to do this correctly...how to size them correctly and why the nails are different(if it makes a difference) would have led me to give this item another star.
