I have run many thousands of miles over the last 30 years. My experience is that running shoes are very much a matter of what works for you: shape of your foot, gait mechanics, age-related degree of protection required etc. What works is NOT brand or even model of shoe within brand specific since the companies keep changing shoes while retaining names. Therefore one is required to do a meta-analysis of the factors I mention above relative to the current incarnation of the shoe.
The Merrell Mix Master 2 work for me at this stage. The low drop and lack of overly intrusive motion control elements allow the foot to move more naturally, while offering much more protection/cushion than barefoot or even minimalist shoes. The cushioning is fairly stiff -but I like that because I feel it keeps my foot from rocking laterally.
