If you're thinking of trying out this whole zero (or minimal) drop thing and stepping into a shoe that allows your foot to feel the ground and adopt a more natural footstrike pattern, I think you could do no better than this New Balance MT1010V2 shoe. I work with pro athletes, and I'm a kind-of-sort-of serious-ish runner (I'm in my 40s and I run a 6:30 min. mile a couple times a week). I've tried (and still use) a few pairs of truly MINIMAL shoes, and sometimes they're just....you know, too minimal. They're fun for 30 sec. sprints, but for a 20-30 min. run, they just don't offer enough protection and support and squish.
This shoe is all the benefit of minimal without the pain, the perfect entry point shoe if you want to see what the whole minimal thing's about without jumping all the way to a glorified running sock. It's the best of both worlds: the protection and responsiveness of a more standard running shoe with the feel, weightlessness and ground-connection of a minimal.
As for the looks of the shoe, these are the coolest looking shoes I've ever purchased.
I don't know how they'll hold up (only a few runs in so far), but to paraphrase the band Chicago, "Can I dig these shoes? Yes I can!"

I really liked these shoes so much that I tried ordering a second pair after I found the first ones were flawed. These shoes have built in liner which is where the problem is. The first time wearing them I thought there was a rock or lint in the toe box but that wasn't the case. After further inspection I found liner in the toe box is poorly done and has bumps and wrinkles. It appears to have the left over string hidden under it I suspecting but causes friction. I understand the minimalist idea as feeling the ground but its different when you fork out over a $100 dollars and when the imperfection is in the same spot only causing irritation. Also to note is in the toe box (on first pair) there was missing material. New Balance should thank Amazon for being helpful as I would be passing them up but will be giving a different model a try since New Balance is one of the few wide feet friendly shoe companies. I have pictures and have uploaded them twice saying they posted but not showing up. What's going on Amazon I'm trying to save you money from returns!
