I have had three pairs of the Salomon Sense. They were great...except. Except after just a few hundred miles they were trashed. Signs of wear showed up early. Things like toes pushing through mesh, midsole compression and outsole delamination showed up, in varying degrees beginning after only the first 100 miles. So along comes the Sense Ultra. The midsole is denser and is holding up better. No signs of delamination. A bit of extra reinforcement around the toe area will help there. The rock "plate" had been extended. Overall, for me, this is a better shoe. I like the ride better as well. The outsole has more lugs over a broader area which helps with traction on a broad range of surfaces.

Fits like a slipper and light-weight. Definitely the best race shoe I have found. Do not buy if you're looking for a shoe to last you for the next 6 months. That's like taking an F1 car solo for a trip across America. You should know what you're buying. High performance means a sacrifice of features, in this case longevity. Had mine 6-8weeks before the fabric next to the toes started splitting. Doesn't really bother me (Air vents!), I still wear for every run and could easily sew up, but for fussy light-weights this is probably a deal-breaker.
Have since bought 3 more pairs and feel I have found my shoe.

Awesome shoe, I did my first 50 miler in them with no trouble and I love running in them. However, they do fit snugger through the mid-foot than most people will be use to and after 100 miles on the shoe the cushioning is showing signs of wear and/or compression. In all, I'm a huge fan of the Salomon brand and the great energy spent in the design of their products, it really shows through when out on the trails.
