I bought the Shimano wide cycling shoes to fit feet that have widened over the years due to bunions. My once 9-C feet are now 11-4Es! These size 45 shoes, though only labeled E, fit well with the Velcro straps loosened slightly, and my feet have stopped hurting after I ride. The cleats fit nicely into my 6-year-old Shimano SPD pedals and click out smartly. My only complaint is that I had to pay an extra $26 to buy and have the base with side rails installed between the cleat and the sole to make walking safer and the cleat more stable when riding. I recommend this part (it's shown on the direction sheet) and believe this should be part of the shoe as sold, as it was on my older Shimano mountain bike shoes. Perhaps this configuration is standard on road shoes, but it seems to be just another way to make more money when you already have to add about $22 for the cleats. At least it should be advertised as a needed extra at the point of sale.

I've used these shoes for two hour long rides so far and I'm very happy with them. They fit nicely and are well made. My only complaint, and I've got to try hard to find one, is that the sole is rather firm. I think I'm going to put a thin insole in them to pad it a bit but overall, I'm very happy with them.

I would suggest that if this is your first pair of bike shoes, that you try on a pair of Shimano's at your local bike shop. I was able to try on a pair at REI, however I didn't purchase from REI because the shoe were 120 bucks w/o taxes. I ordered the shoe from Amazon (while in REI) and it was less that 100 bucks total. This shoe has vents at the bottom and is very comfortable considering this is my first road shoe.
I purchased the Shimano PD-R540 pedals (cleats will come with the pedals) and so far so good. You can't go wrong with ordering this shoe especially if this is your first one.

Shimano is a great company and this shoe shows off their stuff well. It is fairly light weight and the straps work well. The loss of the star comes from two things, first is the fact that my foot was to wide for the normal shoe but not wide enough for the E (wide) shoe. I kept the wide shoe as I would rather have a little play than suffocate my foots circulation. The second issue is that they dont breath as good as I hoped. Having a black shoe, in the sun your feet can get a little toasty and there are only a couple spots that offer ventilation and they are not that good. Other than these two issues I feel the shoe was worth the money and looks great with my bike.

I have very wide feet. I didn't think there was any way to get a pair of shoes so I could have clips. I was really worried when I ordered. Well they fit perfect. The clips were easy to install. The shoes not only fit well they are comfortable.
