I have been through four pairs of leather hiking boots over the past few years. Every time the boots seem to fit well, but once I get them out on a steep, rough trail I get blisters and hotspots even after a reasonable breaking in period. This time I really did my research. I looked at the Vasque Wasatch, and determined that the Vasque Bitterroot was similar but with a more durable, upgraded build.Long story shortI finally found a boot that fits perfectly and works right out of the box! The Vasque Bitterroot GTX is a solidly built heavy boot, but fits like a glove and feels light on the trail. When they arrived, I took them out of the box and did my regular 5 mile training hike. The trail is really rocky, rough, and steep with a respectable 2000 foot total elevation gain. Most heavy boots can handle the flats well but cause blisters on steep uphill or downhill segments. These Bitterroot boots cradled my feet comfortably with no discomfort whatsoever. I have wide feet with a narrow heel. I bought these boots 1/2 size large in a EE Wide width. The toe box is wide enough so that my toes did not get crunched on the downhills. At the same time, the arch and heel are snug enough so there is no rubbing to cause heel blisters. On a side note, I always use "Superfeet Green" shoe inserts for my high arch.
I know this whole review might sound like an advertisement for Vasque, but I am so happy with these boots that I wanted to spread the news so others won't waste money on heavy backing boots that never break in. I would feel comfortable being 5 days out in the wilderness wearing these boots. I cannot say that about any of my previous mid to heavy duty hiking boots.

When these boots arrived I was immediately impressed by their construction and heft. They are well constructed and beefy and their Vibram soles have a fantastic gripping design. I purchased these boots a few weeks ago and have put them to the test with multiple hikes, camping trips, and back country trips. My initial impression of the boots upon trying them on was that they run large. After a quick online search I learned that hiking/backpacking boots do run large because of the nature of their use. The boots need to be a little larger than your feet to allow some wiggle room and room for your foot to move around when hiking, especially on uphill and downhill sections.
These boots were comfortable from the moment I put them on. I have slogged through ankle deep water and not a drop has gotten into the boots. My 7 day backpack trip begins soon and I am putting 5 to 7 miles a day on these boots and am thrilled that they are so comfortable I don't immediately take them off when arriving home. This is my first experience with a hiking boot that is as comfortable as my favorite Nikes.
Honest reviews on Vasque Men's Bitterroot GTX GTX Waterproof Boot
I've recently edited this review after having them a while to add praise to this boot. These boots are well worth their price and function with outstanding character. In the months since I bought them I've come to consider this boot possibly among the best you can buy for the price. It is every bit as good or better than the overpriced USA made Danner boots or even some Lowa boots, though Lowa is one of my favorite boot manufacturers. Oboz is the other. BUT ... you may pay more for those boots. I'm about to go edit my rating DOWN on some Danner boots I got after having them a while. The Lowa and Oboz ratings I've published will all stay 5 star excellent.I love these Bitterroots. The sizing was correct. I wear a size 11 and that is what I got from Vasque with a perfect fit. I took a while trying to figure out which Vasque to get. I wanted something comfortable for possible daily wear but also tough enough for truly rugged use. These Bitterroots were the right choice. Very comfortable with little break in required. A couple of hours of walking is about all it took. I replaced the insole with 10 Second Arch 1000s for better arch support, but I do that with almost every boot I get. The only exceptions are the Oboz and the Rocky S2V boots since their insoles are well thought out factors in their designs.
Very tough leather exterior the good old-school way to make durable hiking boots that outlast most boots with "synthetic" material. An extra pair of laces sent with them. Love the grippy designed vibram soles. It is truly an all terrain soul better than most. Good ankle support. Waterproof with Gore Tex inner lining. Etc. Just be sure to inspect the boots when received and after using them a while, but the same goes for any boot. One reason Amazon is my "one-stop-shopping" place is because they will take back anything. Superb customer support on Amazon. They ship out a replacement as soon as you ask for one without requiring the item to be returned before shipping the new one. With Amazon's customer support there's no need to worry about being stuck with a sub-standard or defective product.
I VERY highly rate this boot. Forget the 50 to 100 or so dollars more you'll pay for other boots just because folks wrongly assume anything made in China is poor quality. Guess what, just about everything is made in China. If you don't buy Chinese products you'll likely be walking abour naked, not driving any vehicle, not have any home appliances, and not have an electronic device on which to read this review. All of those have Chinese components. Heck! Even Harley Davidson, of which I own a couple, have foreign made components! For those who reject Chinese products I have three words: Get over it! Their workers are human too and need to feed their families also.
