I'm relatively new to minimalist shoes and have been using this and a nike free run 3.0 for the past month to transition down from traditional shoes. The one thing you'll notice right away is the extra wide toe box. At first, it looks weird and I thought it would take awhile to get used to. Now, I have a love-hate relationship with it. I love it because I have flat feet and the extra width gives me more room and comfort. I hate it because now every other shoe feels cramped especially against my pinky toe.

Also, if you're like me and either can't stand the look of VFF toes or can't fit into VFF toes comfortably, have a look into these. The sole is razor-cut and extremely flexible similar if not identical to VFFs. The zero drop might be important to some and the heel claw is exceptional where it actually makes it difficult to get the shoe off. Other than that, it looks like a regular shoe and, in my opinion, is one of the few good looking minimalist shoes available. Other than the love-hate bit above, I'm hesitant to comment on the insole and how it'll hold up to sweat and/or going barefoot but I do wish it had come with an ortholite or something similar.

I,m a 40 year old, running for exercise (3-6 miles, 3 times a week), not "training" for anything. I was ready for new running shoes and a friend recomended Altra. Read reviews, decided to try the Samsons. I love these shoes, it's like being barefoot with a protective sole. Do your recearch on minimalist running before putting thease on. Proper running technique is essential (you can't heel strike, it's to painfull in these shoes). Pay attention to the fitting guide & allow 1/2" space between shoe & big toe (12,s felt snug, went to a 12 1/2, perfect). "One mistake everone makes is overdoing it" is something I heard on one of the sites. If you run 10 mls, start with 1/2 ml. I had been practicing technique for 1 1/2 weeeks previously, ran untill I felt any strain in my calves (1.8 mls), big mistake. I had trouble walking for the next 3 days. Over the next 2 weeks I did a 1/2 ml increments up to 3 mls, no problem.

These are fantastic shoes if you are ready for them or willing to take the time to adjust. As mentioned in the product description, these shoes are "zero drop" which means the heel and the toe are at the same level. Most athletic shoes have the heel 8mm higher then the toes so you are basically running in high heels. Most of us are used to this so it feels "normal" but it is not healthy for the foot. If you are new to zero drop footwear, take the time to slowly adjust, follow the instructions in the box.

Once you are accustomed to zero drop you will absolutely love these. They are lightweight and give you a great feel for the ground. The wide toe box lets your toes spread out when you "plant" and push off, giving you increased stability. The very thin sole keeps you close to the ground so lateral movements in crossfit / bootcamp / etc feel secure instead of rolling sensation I got in my older, thicker shoes.

One word of caution though, you will feel any imperfections or obstacles in the ground such as gravel, pebbles, twigs, etc so these are not made for rough terrain IMO.

I gradually switched from traditional, thick running shoes to the Altra Instinct and now the Altra Samson. I've ran a lot in the Instinct to build up my calves and still have cushion when my heel does drops in longer runs. Thinking I was ready for barefoot, I found my feet too soft and thought these would a good compromise. They do work great on shorter runs (under 10 miles), but longer distances leave my feet and hips a bit sore still. I don't see this as a fault of the shoe though and instead my body transitioning and training. If you want to run barefoot-like with some protection, I think these are a great shoe. I've done some trail running in them and muddy conditions are extremely slippery because the sole design, but these aren't really meant as trail shoes.

Love the shoe so far! I've put about 100 miles on it since receiving them in the mail. I would wholeheartedly advise following the transitioning guidelines here:

Once you're used to the shoes though they feel great and are so much fun to run in. They feel very fast and are great for in city running. I would not recommend using these on anything but very mild trails though because they have very little protection and it feels like landing on a rock wrong could hurt quite a bit.
