I'm posting here an enhanced version of a comment I left to a 2-star reviewer of the womens' model of this shoe. That review expressed some complaining about the efficiency of the spikes on ice. A 3-star reviewer, below, mentioned the same issues. Following my own experience with those shoes, I thought that these points of view needed some counterpart, so I decided to share mine here. This review is about the Mens' Gel-Arctic 4 WR.I use these shoes to run in the woods in fall and spring, when the trails are muddy and/or covered with wet leaves, and for winter running, on tracks as well as on snowy/icy streets. In such conditions, I have found that spikes are a must.
Fall/Spring: The spikes do a wonderful job for trail running in the woods, climbing and descending very steep hills like a charm.
Winter: Though the shoes were perfect on snow, I had the same "slippery" experience some reviewers reported the first time I ventured on roads while it was... freeze-raining (!). Back home, I used a Dremel grinder and made X-shaped grooves on the "face" of the spikes, which are actually effectively flat. It worked really fine thereafter. But I didn't stop my experiments there. I easily found spare spikes for track racing shoes -they are pretty cheap and not hard to find at all, unlike what another reviewer said. They make those spikes in different shapes and lengths. Screw threads are standard. I chose the 3/8" length, pyramidal shape (not too sharp-would wear too fastbut still sharp enough and not flat). The result is absolutely fine. You can even find flat-head screws that fit in the threads, so you can plug the screw holes and run without spikes after the winter running season, or where/when spikes may not be needed or wanted. I really appreciate the fact that the spikes are replaceable and removable. (Also, for those interested, I also checked and confirm that the original "flat" 3/8" spikes could be ordered from my sports shop.)
Now, accelerating on purpose while climbing icy hills is just some kind of rewarding thrill, and the secure feeling while descending is absolutely pleasant when running on snow and ice. These shoes give me exactly what I expect from winter shoes.
I've had no issue with the water resistance. Fitting is true to size, toes are not compressed.
Note that they are a bit on the heavy side and thus are not intended for road race running. They are definitely trail/snow/ice running/training shoes that have been performing really, really well for me up to now.
Hope it helps,
Good running!

GREAT SHOE. I SAW IT 1ST IN MY LOCAL NEWSPAPER. ROADRUNNER DID NOT CARRY. ONLY AMAZON CARRIED IT. I USED THIS SHOE TO GET BACK TO RUNNING AFTER ALMOS T 2 MONTHS OFF FROM RUNNING. I RAN AND WALKED ON THEM IN THE VERY COLD MORNING WINTER. THEY PERFORMED AWSOME. I TOOK THE SPIKES OFF SINCE I DON'T RUN IN ICE. LOVE THE FEEL OF THIS SHOE.Honest reviews on ASICS Men's Gel-Artic 4 Wr Running Shoe
