I have worn Merrell shoes and sandals for years and love them. My husband reports that these hiking boots are everything I said they would be.

No breaking in period, they feel really light on your feet and the Goretex liner keeps the feet dry.

The removable insole makes for a comfortable feel and fit. We hike for miles, sometimes over rough terrain, and have never felt discomfort.

We have both found that Merrell shoes and boots are true to size, and we have not found any difference from style to style ... we take the same size each time.

They are easy to clean ...we do so under a running faucet (cool water), both the uppers and the sole, using a little dish soap and a soft nail brush. Air dry (never too near to a heat source) and they look great again.

HINT: After each wearing, remove the insole to allow the boots to "air out" more completely. We periodically gently hand wash the insole to keep it fresh.

Only for really heavy duty mountain hiking, or really bad weather would we choose to wear our leather Zamberlan boots over our Merrells.

Finished a 9 mile hike (some flat, some rocky, some uphill/downhill terrain) wearing the boots. Before then, I only wore them for a brief time on city streets, so there was no extensive break in. My feet felt great after the 8-9 mile hike. Boots were flexible yet sturdy. Good ankle support. No issues whatsoever about not really breaking them in prior to the hike. I purchase the boots a half size larger. I'm a 9.5M, and this size works well for me with sneakers and dress shoes, but my last pair of hiking boots in a 9.5 was OK, but not great. My middle toe (which sticks out) would sometimes hit the front of the boot when going down a steep downhill. So I decided to go 1/2 size larger on the Merrell Chameleon. Best decision I ever made. The 9 mile hike had a steep downhill and my toe never hit the front of the boot. Maybe this boot's lacing system does a better job at holding my feet in the boot. But whatever it is, this is a great boot and is highly recommended. I understand that Merrell came out with a Chameleon 5. But if you can get this Chameleon 4 on clearance, go for it.

Merrill has let me down again. This is the second pair of Merrill shoes I have purchased while working in Afghanistan that have not held up. The stitching is coming apart and the soles have not held up to this climate in Afghanistan. I will not purchase another pair of Merrill's. I will stick to my Saloman's which are the best for this place...

when buying an outdoor boot these are second to none. they're light weight, fit great, give ankle support, & are comfortable. i was previously stationed in Japan and was using these in the forrested beach areas up north; it was also an area hit hard by the 2011 tsunami so you have a unique mixture of terrain that these boots handled well in.
