I am not a runner, I bought a pair of the Monos direct from the factory. I chose the leather tops with the 3/8" leather laces. I tie them with a simple knot on the thong strap which can be slid back and forth to adjust tightness or to slip the sandals on and off. I didn't cut the lace short, I just wrap the excess around my ankle and tie it up.
I've found them very comfortable, especially in the warm south Florida climate. I've been wearing them on weekends and change into them when I get home from work. I love the feel of the leather laces, very secure and comfortable one they've worn in a bit. Very well worth the price. Hint: I ordered one shoe a half size smaller than the other for a good fit. The factory has no problem with doing this. I think my problems with nail fungus may be a thing of the past, keeping your feet out of the hot-damp may be the best cure.
I've never liked flip-flops because they keep falling off your feet unless you keep your toes somewhat clenched (which has been claimed to cause hammer-toe). I never realized just how comfortable sandals can be until I discovered Luna sandals. I really can't recommend these enough. It may take you a while to get used to the leather lace between the toes, but the material softens up after a few days of use and then you hardly notice it at all. They offer a few other options for laces, but don't be afraid of the thick leather ones. I also have a pair of the original Luna's with their first generation ATS laces, but I find that they keep loosening up on me. The newer version of the ATS straps may be better, but I have no first hand knowledge of that.
