I was somewhat confused about what the "ion-mask" shoe really was. Is it water proof? The answer is no. It is highly water repellent. Most of the time your feet stay dry because these shoes repel water. The advantage of this technology is the shoe is way more breathable than something like GoreTex, because there is no membrane just breathable mesh. The disadvantage is that if you really get the shoe wet as in crossing a stream where part of the shoe is actually under water your feet will get wet. These shoes are great if you want a very breathable shoe for damp conditions, they are not great if you are counting on them to be waterproof.I need a wide toe box and found these shoes fit very well and were very comfortable. They might run a little big. The sole is not as stiff as a hiking shoe, more like a trail shoe, so may not be the best choice on rough terrain, but is very comfortable. My big problem with this shoe (other than the confusing claims made about how waterproof it is) is its durability. Mine lasted less than six months until the sole separated from the shoe. The shoes also looked pretty worn by that point. The fabric on the inside of the heels was badly frayed and some of the fabric on the outside had ripped. I could understand this if I wore them in rugged conditions, but I mostly wore them around town. Anyway, I replaced them with a pair of GoreTex shoes. My feet are hotter but I need a shoe that will stay dry in all conditions.
